Civil Engineering

Civil Engineers are responsible for the design and construction of structures including dams, bridges, pipelines, roads, towers and buildings. They are also involved in the environmental sector in the assessment of the impact of large scale projects on the environment. A Civil Engineer will examine an architect's drawings and determine if the chosen materials will be strong enough to hold a structure of that height or design. At the same time they would also think about how the structure might affect its surroundings. It is the responsibility of the civil engineer to produce safe, economical and environmentally-sound structures.

Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers design, organise and oversee the construction, operation and maintenance of mechanical and process plant and installations, establish programs for the coordination of manufacturing activities, and ensure usage of resources is cost effective. The links below provide quick access to basic information for this occupation.  Greater detail can be found using any of the page tabs above

Chemical engineering is about the method in which raw materials are converted into useful and commercial end products. Research of raw materials and their properties, design and development of equipment and the evaluation of operating processes are all part of chemical engineering. These skills are combined to extract raw materials which can then be refined and manufactured to produce such things as food, petrol, plastics, paints, paper, ceramics, minerals and metals. Often these processes are carried out at large scale plants and the safe operation of these plants is also part of chemical engineering.

Engineering is concerned with the design and production of goods and services. Engineers converts scientific knowledge into technology and then technology into successful innovation. Many seemingly simple aspects of our daily lives have been conceptualised, designed and developed by an engineer.
